Scriptures to Pray Over Your Kids

Kelsey Lasher

Prayer is one of the most powerful tools we have as mothers. At times it might be hard to know how to pray, but don’t worry! The Bible offers plenty of inspiration and instruction on ways we can pray over our children and those in their lives. Here are a few different Scriptures to pray over your kids, their friends, their teachers and their minds as they start the new school year.

For Knowledge

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2, NIV

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,  filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God. Philippians 1:9-11, NIV

Listen to advice and accept discipline, and at the end you will be counted among the wise.
Proverbs 19:20, NIV

Prayer: Jesus, we thank you for crafting our children’s minds and hearts. We pray that you would expand their capacity to learn and grow. Give them discipline, work ethic, perseverance and the ability to receive instruction and correction with grace. We ask that with everything they learn about the world you’ve created, our children’s hearts would be drawn deeper and deeper toward you. That they would be amazed by all that you have orchestrated. That they would learn the goodness and comfort of truth, and that all of it would point their hearts toward you — the way, the truth and the life. We ask that knowledge would produce passion and wisdom within them. Show us how to teach them well.

For Friendships

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. Proverbs 13:20, NIV

As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another. Proverbs 27:17, NIV

The righteous choose their friends carefully, but the way of the wicked leads them astray. Proverbs 12:26, NIV

Prayer: God, we know that friendship is no small thing. That the people our children surround themselves with shape their minds, hearts, character and choices. We ask that you would set aside friends that are wise, and that our children would be wise friends. We ask for friends who are loving, and that our children would be loving friends. Guard and guide our kids as they open their hearts to friendships new and old. Speak to them and guide them, Holy Spirit. Be present in their friendships and use the relationships that are built in our kids’ classrooms, sports fields, choir rooms and girl scout troops to build your kingdom. Both in the hearts of our children and the hearts of their friends.

For Safety and Peace

In peace I will lie down and sleep,
for you alone, LORD,
make me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8, NIV

You will keep in perfect peace
those whose minds are steadfast,
because they trust in you.
Isaiah 26:3, NIV

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7, NIV

“No weapon forged against you will prevail, and you will refute every tongue that accuses you. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and this is their vindication from me,” declares the LORD. Isaiah 54:17. NIV

Prayer: God, we ask that you would surround our children with your presence, peace and protection. That your peace that passes understanding would guard their and minds, and that you would watch over every step they take. We ask that no weapon formed against them, both in deed and in word, would not prevail, but that your blessing and protection upon their days would be immense. We thank you that you go with them where we cannot. That you are strong where we are weak, and that you love them with unending love. We trust them to your care. May peace dwell in the hearts of our children. May it dwell also in the hearts of us, their mothers.

 For Teachers

I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint. Jeremiah 31:25, NIV

So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
Galatians 6:9, NLT

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23, NLT

Prayer: Lord, we thank you for teachers. You know the hardships and burdens they’ve carried these last few years. We ask that you would refresh and satisfy them. Bless them for their love and care. Give them the gifts that only you can — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. May those gifts sent straight from the heart of you, our generous Father, enrich their lives and the lives of our children. We ask that you would show us how to be blessings to them. Give them energy, endurance and a great reward for the ways that they serve our kids.

We pray that these Scriptures help guide you as you pray over your kids this school year.
