Bible Story Activities for Kids

The Bible is full of stories that are engaging and encouraging for our kids. Here are four Bible stories with some fun activities to accompany them!

Joshua and the Battle of Jericho
Joshua 6:1-27

This is a fun one that can involve movement and noise! Perfect for getting energy out and instilling truth at the same time. Build a wall with blocks, pillows, Legos, etc. You and your kids march around your “wall” six times quietly. Talk about how the Israelites marched around the walls of Jericho once a day for six days, but on the seventh day, they did something different. They marched around the city seven times and blew their trumpets! Have your kids pretend to blow trumpets and march around the wall seven times. Let them make as much noise as they want and lean into the excitement of it all. While they blow their pretend trumpets, knock over the wall! Talk about how God made the walls of Jericho fall down and gave the people the city.

After the noise and excitement dies down, take a moment to remind your kids that sometimes, God does things in unexpected ways like knocking over a great big wall while His people march and play trumpets. No matter what we face, we can trust that God is powerful and will help us when we need it.

Paul and Silas in Prison
Acts 16:16-40

Take some time to read this story beforehand so you can retell it to your kids. It might be a little too long to read to younger ones verbatim. Tell your kids about how Paul and Silas were thrown in jail for talking about Jesus. While they were locked up, they prayed and sang songs of praise. Suddenly, there was an earthquake, and they were freed. This amazing miracle led to the jailer and his family deciding to follow Jesus.

Play a game of “Jail Break” to reinforce the story. Have your kids sit on the floor with their hands behind their backs as if they’re handcuffed. Encourage them to sing a worship song or pray out loud like Paul and Silas. While they sing or pray, suddenly yell “Jail Break” and stomp your feet like there is an earthquake. Encourage your kids to jump up and celebrate. Repeat as often as you want.

Remind your kids that sometimes in life, we face circumstances that are hard just like Paul and Silas. However, God is always with us, and we can seek Him and praise Him no matter what. When we do, He’ll bless us with joy, and it just might point others towards Him.

Manna In the Wilderness
Exodus 16

This story is perfect for snack time, but takes a little bit of preparation. Before snack, scatter something bread-like on a clean floor or on a blanket spread outside. Honey Nut Cheerios would be perfect since the Bible says that Manna tasted like “wafers made with honey” (Exodus 16:31). When your kids get hungry, have them come and gather up as much of their snack as they want and then sit down and eat it with them. Tell them the story about God providing food for the Israelites in the desert and how they gathered it up six days a week.

Reinforce the idea that God sees our needs and provides for us. Encourage your kids to thank God for how He takes care of them.

The “Lost” Parables
Luke 15

Jesus told three parables in Luke 15 – the Parable of the Lost Sheep, the Lost Coin, and the Lost Son. You can illustrate these for your kids by playing a game of hide and seek. You can hide a lamb stuffed animal or a coin, like in the story, and encourage your kids to go and find it. When they do, celebrate! Cheer, play music and have a dance party, clap, or jump up and down. However you choose to celebrate, make sure it’s fun and impactful. Repeat as often as you want.

When you’re finished playing, talk to your kids about what the story illustrates. Tell them that we often refer to people who don’t know about Jesus and His love as “lost.” Jesus used these stories to teach us how much God desires to be friends with us and how happy He is when a lost person finds Him. Tell your kids that just like they celebrated when they found their lost thing, God celebrates when our hearts are found. This shows God’s deep love for us.
